Pruritus Ani

Pruritus Ani, also known as anusitis, is severe chronic itching (pruritus) of the skin around the anus.  Pruritus Ani appears in 1%-5% of the population , and men are affected more often than women by a ratio of 4:1. Most patients are distributed in the 30-70 age group, and it is particularly prevalent in the 40-60 age group.

Pruritus Ani could stem from many different causes including parasites, bacterial and viral infections (including sexually transmitted diseases), anal perspiration, diarrhea, residual stool deposits, yeast infection or Candidiasis. However, between 25%-75% of the cases have no co-existing pathology. Topical corticosteroids are recognized as useful medical therapy for managing perianal skin irritation and topical analgesics are recognized as useful for symptomatic relief of local pain and itching (Topical hydrocortisone and topical analgesics are available OTC).
